No SharShar being obsessed about not pooping or pooping or anything to do with poop is not necessarily common with dementia or Parkinson's, but is common with most folks of an older age. They like to talk about their pooping or lack there of.
Why? You got me.

My FIL - prior to dementia -was OBSESSED with his bowel movements. He literally HID laxatives to take on top of the Miralax my SIL was already giving him daily (his doctor's orders). His doctor told him it was ok to go a day or two without having a bowel movement - but he was ADAMANT that he needed to have multiple a day or he was constipated.

This got FAR worse once he had dementia. I think he couldn't remember if he had one that day, so he thought he needed to have another. He DEMANDED strong laxatives daily - which went the opposite direction. It was just awful. This was all once he was in the SNF. They tried to balance it and he would swing on a pendulum which made the obsession even worse.

My grandmother has this obsession and has dementia. My BIL's mother has this obsession and DOES NOT have dementia. I'm not sure the correlation is the dementia. It may be part of the aging process. It may be a fear of not being able to go. As we age, after a certain point, our world shrinks quite a bit and we generally become hyperfocused on our bodily functions, aches and pains and comorbidities.

I would say, as a person of an older age who is also a caregiver, that there is a lot of discussion about pooping because it is so distressing to not be able to control it as when younger.

If they weren't obsessed before Dementia and are after, I would say its the Dementia. I think it stems from potty traing asca child. They do get child like. And Hospitals are obsessed with you going everyday and if you don't they start pushing the laxatives.

My dad was obsessed with moving his bowels everyday. Because HIS mother was obsessed with it.

More a generational thing. although he did have Parkinson's. he was like this before the Parkinson's became an issue.

Every time I see this post I think of something, but I'm not sure how to put it without it sounding strange, or maybe vulgar

So here goes, I heard a older man once say, I can't have an orgasm anymore, pooping is the next best thing.

Maybe there is some connection here. Like an orgasm is a release and pooping is a release.

?? 🤔
