It looks like they won’t prescribe for mom because they need to see her in order to evaluate.

You can either get her to her doctor or call 911 and have her taken to the emergency room where she’ll get the medical care she needs.

The only other option is to let her waste away and die. It’s up to you.

Is your Mother in a facility? It is standard practice now to require to be seen by your doctor once or twice a year in order to get a prescription renewed. I don't know why you are mailing her doctor a letter rather than calling him... What prescription is she on and for what problem? Is it something like Aracept for ALZ? We need more info in order to give you guidance.

Jenny, I think you have got the situation wrong. I don’t know any doctor who would change a patient’s medication following a phone call to the practice nurse from a daughter, when the patient hasn’t been seen for months and the practice has no idea what is ‘wrong’ with the current medication. It would be totally negligent + unprofessional. No wonder the nurse was shocked! Stop thinking ‘mean’ and get your mother to a doctor.

It would be very rare for a doctor to change a medicine without seeing a patient. I don’t think that is standard of care.

I understand your point of view too but she has Alzheimer's and people with that do often back out of going places especially a dr.

"I'm extremely concerned about her she is down to 100 lbs".

How long has Mom had Alzheimers?

Is this a new sudden loss of weight? Or a steady decline?

Are you wanting investigations? Are you wanting curative treatments for any ailments or diseases that get identified?

Have you thought about whatedical treatments or interventions may be beneficial vs be burdonsome, or futile at Mom's stage of life?

Call the local Area Agency on Aging and ask to be given a list of doctors in your area who make home visits.

Or, ask her current doctor if he has a visiting nurse or Physician's Assistant that can be sent out.

Jenny, you say that your Mom, who has dementia, received chemo for colon cancer, and that this resulted in neuropathy. I don't know of many medications that will help her with this. Is her current complaint one of pain? I am afraid that without seeing her there are few MDs who will feel free to prescribe medications for her. I wonder if you can check into some online doctor meetings for her that might work in discussing this with your Mom present if you are her POA. Ask the office if this is possible.
I sure wish you good luck.
