She is partially blind with aphasia. She use to attend 2 senior centers where she did painting, ceramics and had friends. It is too far for her to travel to now. She is 90, partially blind, stroke victim with apashia. She love to paint, draw, sing, do ceramics. Some dimentia has started but she is still fiesty and alert...just needs time to get her words together. She is not ready to sit in front of a t.v. all day. Not moving around and being active is slowly killing her. I need to find her a senior center closer to home. Please advise.

Contact her county's Agency on Aging, explain the situation, and ask for suggestions for places nearby.

It is great that she is willing to be active and you are willing to help her!

The AAA in my area of Michigan has annual Caregiver Expos, at which little booklets of services for seniors are available by a commercial service which publishes them. I don't recall the publisher or the name of the booklet, but it has ads and listings of a wide variety of facilities. If you call the AAA as Jeanne suggests, you might ask about that booklet. It's a consolidated source of places for the elderly.

I'm so sorry - somehow I misread your post and thought you were looking for a permanent housing arrangement.

I've found that senior centers in the lower income areas don't offer as much, but that higher income levels offer a much wider variety of activities. I haven't checked the really upscale communities.

I see that Oxon Hill isn't too far from Alexandria; I'd check out their senior centers, as well as those in surrounding communities.

There might even be some adult ed programs duringi the day that offer classes; they wouldn't be free, but generally the classes are low cost.

Another more long term consideration, if it's affordable, is to enroll her in an art class at a community college. You might want to enroll yourself as well, so she isn't alone amidst a lot of younger people.
