My mom is 88 years old, she has dementia which has gotten considerably worse during the last couple of months. I am her only child and work full time. Mom has on apartment on the side of my house. Mom is on a limited income, $920 a month social security check. Can you give some information as to how I go about finding out if she qualifies for a caregiver to come during the day. Is my first step to try to get mom on Medicaid? (She is on a Medicare Advantage Plan as of now). Where is the Medicaid office on Staten Island? I am overwhelmed, any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Maria A.

Actually, the conversation starts with her MD, since he is the one to order the care. She certainly sounds eligible for Medicaid, so call your county social services and get the ball rolling.

The Staten Island Inter-Agency Council for Aging (IAC) may be able to give you direction. Ask about Respite Vouchers, these are vouchers offered to in-home caregivers of a loved one so they may hire temporary help to care for your mom while you are out of the house.

Hi,
I'm in Atlanta GA, the only thing I have been able to find is palliative care, which means she will be kept comfortable, but no "cures" will be used. It's a lot like hospice care. If anyone knows of anything better in Atlanta, I'm drowning here.

Yes, your Mom qualifies for Medicaid. They will give 3 hours a day, 5 days a week through a home health agency who provides care through Medicaid.

I would love to find some part time care as well I;m in a small town in SE Colorado and when we need to go to our conventions, we have been trying to get one of my brothers to fly out and stay with Mom, but that's not always possible. I have a woman who can come in for a day and even a night if we need her, but we sometimes need a few nights, and I am struggling there. Mom has lived with me for a year and a half and if I don't have someone to stay with her, I don't go anywhere. She has moderate dementia and doesn't think she needs a 'babysitter', yet she can't cook, can't work the tv remote, and I am afraid to leave her for more than a couple of hours. There are few resources in my small town.

Check into your state's Department of Aging. Some States offer Long Term Care services to its seniors. Also, was she in the service and served during the past wars? If so, there may be Veterans Aid and Attendance that you can look into.
