Do we need something in writing from a lawyer? Is there any in home care that is available through my moms medicare that would allow us to have someone watch her while we are at work. She can't be left alone but we don't want her in a nursing home.

Find Care & Housing
Look at Assisted Living as a possibility. A good facility will help sort out the financial options. If she is the widow of a wartime vet, look at VA Aid & Attendance. Between SS, VA and rental income from her house, you should be able to make ends meet.

You are not responsible for your mom's medical bills UNLESS you sign as the responsible party. Your mom should purchase any home health care services, medication, etc., in her own name. Use her credit card. If she doesn't have one? Get her one. They're easy as pie on the internet. Anything you purchase for mom? Purchase it in her name.

If you don't have healthcare and financial powers of attorney, you should get that done. An attorney might charge $400 or so; or go to LegalZoom and fill in the blanks for your mom. Follow the instructions for signing/witnessing/notarizing and you're good to go -- probably $100 or a little more.

There's nothing available through Medicare to pay for someone watching her while you are at work. There are adult daycare centers available for that though. You'd take her there. One in my area charges $57/day including lunch from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM five days a week.

Contact the Council on Aging through the county (?) and see if mom is entitled to any assistance from them. Although mom has too many assets for Medicaid, she does get a $1,000 stipend to help with comfort care each year.

If your mom's eligible for Medicaid, it's possible they may provide SOME help; but certainly not five days a week.

Your mother is responsible for her own medical and other bills. If one of you is POA, that person should be trying to resolve money issues using Mother's resources.

Have you applied for Medicaid?

Have you looked for an adult day health program where she could go while you are at work?
