I recently read about the use of virgin Coconut Oil for dementia/Alzheimers and wondered if anyone on this list was trying it?

I read an article about Dr. Mary Newport who used it on her husband with remarkable results. She put a couple of tablespoons in his oatmeal and saw results within weeks.(You can a find a link to the article in the Tampa Bay News by googling Dr. Mary Newport.)

I also read about coconut oil for dementia in Dr. Gott's column although he wouldn't recommend it.

The one oil i know that can help will all sorts of psychological problems is fatty fish oil; the best sources being salmon and some other fish Bipolar disease, for example, can definitely be alleviated by this.
You might as well try Coconut Oil -- It might give some short -term relief. It is not a cure, and will not arrest the onset of it over time. Here is one good article on this. alzheimers/2013-05-29/coconut-oil-for-alzheimers/

I used this with my husband for months. It did not seem to help him at all. To us, it was a waste of money. I've also tried several other things that have been sent to me by well meaning friends and NOTHING has changed. The Exelon Patch has, so far, been the best for him. I can really tell when he has not used it. Though I try keeping up with his medications, sometimes I forget. I am VERY interested in the Alzheimer's dogs. I have NO plans on putting him in a home unless he becomes violent. With this dog, hopefully that will not happen. My daughter's little dog was with us about 15 days and she helped him a lot. I am of the opinion a dog might be his best bet right now. And it won't hurt my feelings one bit since I've loved and owned them all my life. Thanks. Blessings to you all.

I make homemade chocolates with coconut oil. I also give my dogs coconut chips as an early morning snack, they love them.
Coconut oil has many benefits, you just need to make sure that you purchase the edible type, not the spectrum brand. Buy virgin coconut oil.

Cut back any statin drugs. Your brain needs cholesterol to maintain itself properly. Your body needs cholesterol to make Vitamin D and assimilate calcium. Over the long term statins attack the liver and the brain. The saturated fats in coconut flakes are good for you in MODERATION. Never go hog wild with any supplement.

I started to makes massages with one tea spoon of extra virgin coconut oil four times a day after I found two scientific articles that shows that extra virgin coconut oil has a very good trans dermal or transcutaneus absortion (works like transdermal patches)
The advantage it is that it do mot cause none gut disorders, once my aunt had a mild diarrhea when she was taking the ool by mouth.
But she it is having the same enhancings in her mood and behavior with the massages with coconut oil as she has when she takes the tea spoons of extra virgin coconut oil by mouth.
I see massages with the oil as an.alternative to takes by.mouth.
We are giving too 80 miligrams of L-CARNOSINE 3;to 4 times a day (there are lots of articles in pubmed about the food supplement carnosine in dementias it is NOT carnitine).
CARNOSINE works as an heavy metal chelator, antioxidative supplement, and os is an antiglycating supplement too,and associated to coconut oil have a synergistic effect to enhance mood and cognition.

Coconut oil can be kept for at least 2 years without it going rancid. I do refrigerate some because I love the taste of the hard stuff. It's the consistancy of cold chocolate.
There are a lot of coconut oil smoothy recipes on the internet. Just google it. Try to get the organic extra virgin oil for the best food value. The things they use in processing the other stuff can be unhealthy and never tastes as good.

I have some coconut oil , Spectrum brand, but the label says it's for skin and hair. It smells great. It's solid at room temp. After reading this, I will look for some that can be used for food. I thought it had cholesterol or something so I was wondering about that..

I do all my frying with it, especially eggs. It's also great for deep frying if you keep the oil at or below 350. It doesn't break down like unsaturated fats do.

You may read 'The Coconut Oil Miracle' and other books/articles by Dr. Bruce Fife. VERY eye-opening. We are avid coconut oil users for everything, especially cooking as it is stable to a higher temperature than any other oil, including olive oil. I use it on my elderlies for whom I care, for foot and hand care, and to control dermatitis issues. They're not very open minded about consuming it, although they LOVED the eggs and potatoes I cooked in coconut oil. The research is extensive, and the treatment is delicious, so, why not??? Hubby and I just had hot herbal tea with a teaspoon of coconut oil in it. I also counsel weight loss clients (my own business) and I have those on a plateau add more coconut oil to their daily routine.

no it is not good enough for high heat. use in salad oil, brush on buttered toast. I put a tsp in each smoothie. Mix in with oatmeal. I use the NOW brand, and it is pretty bland.
coconut oil is also in the MILK, but not in the water. The water is also excellent with more natural electrolytes than...more than Gatorade, that's for sure. the WATER pretty much stopped my mom's leg cramps. It is pricey. I use it to water down the yogurt protein drink smoothies.

I think it has kept mom on an even keel. during summer she sweat a lot, but was cold. The MCT didn't seem to help that one way or another. I keep her on it, figuring it couldn't hurt. I love simple solutions. So perhaps it makes cognition 10% better. Perhaps that is the difference between understanding a request and not. wonder if there were two other things like this that improved memory and functioning by 5% each? Perhaps removing or revising Rx protocol.

Look up Beers Criteria for guidelines in getting off unnecessary prescription or OTC drugs. It could make a major difference in dementia symptoms. Mom currently off ALL Rx

My husband, Bruce, was going down hill fast. His cognitive skills were 11 out of 30 the last time he was checked but he had gotten worse since then. He couldn't find the words to say what he wanted and he couldn't do most things for himself.
I saw Dr. Newport's video and tried it. Bruce's speech cleared in 3 hours. He has been improving ever since. He has been over a month now on the oil, and he does everything for himself again. the last test he scored was 24 out of 30. He did a You Tube video talking about it.

I have an acquaintance at church who is in his mid-70s, diagnosed with dementia about 1 yr ago. His loving wife gave him 2 T of coconut oil about a wk ago and he showed immediate improvement. She said he stopped wrestling with her at bath time, could draw better stick figures, and cooperates more with dressing now. Any improvement is worthwhile, especially using such a cheap & healthful food!

Namenda we did for only five days or so. I think it was sort of helping...except she only wanted to sleep, so what kind of life is that? Recently got her off Ativan...and NO MORE delusions and/or anxiety...what it was supposed to control. For pete's sake, I feel like Mom's a big biochemistry crapshoot. I was going to say "experiment," but I don't think the doctors are taking not and reporting her side effects.

The coconut WATER has magnesium, I think.

Helps with being cold? not keen about too much magnesium internally as it can cause diarrhea. I use magnesium gel ointment on her legs for occasion leg craps...and I have her drink coconut WATER to help with leg cramps. coconut milk has some of the coconut oil in it. And So Delicious makes a coconut yogurt, which is trememdously smooth and delish...but has almost no protein.

Anyway, back to searching best way for Mom to feel warmer. It doesn't help to say, we'll you never move, no circulation...she feels cold she wants to go to bed, which is NOT moving...so around and around we go...or not go in this case.

I am trying it, first with coconut "oil" (which is solid a room temp) in her smoothies, and now MCT oil (Now brand, tastes neutral to me). I think she did have an up blip when I first started the coconut oil. Been on the MCT only a few days. Will look into adding the DHA Omega 3, but hard to get pills down her at this point. (Though she's better than she was a month ago.)

Now problem with being cold all the time, even though it's hot. Read somewhere that coconut oil is good for that, so am poking around researching again. Know somewhere on this list, someone had a thread about their parents always being cold. Thyroid? poor circulation? Or maybe she can't tell the diff between actual cold and the sensation of a breeze...

In addition to the Coconut Oil, I give my mother 600 mg DHA Omega 3 daily. This is recommended by Dr. Oz in his Anti-Aging Diet.

I recently heard the head of the University of Wisconsin - Madison Alzheimer's Research Foundation speak on a local radio program. I emailed him about my mother and forwarded the link for Dr. Newport's results with coconut oil. He hadn't seen the article on the coconut oil but he did say that they had seen good results with DHA Omega 3. This is not regular Omega 3 so make sure you get the right one.
