I have talked about this many times before. My husband is now in stage 6 advanced Alzheimer's. He is 81 I am 70. When I saw an elder lawyer she said our income was too much for Medicaid. Are there other ways to get help. This has taken a complete toll on me. I have been on antibiotics and antiviral drugs for last two months my immune system is down and everything is flaring up on me. My husband needs help with everything. Can hospice evaluation help. I am 70 and he is 81. I also have severe spondylosis. Thanks for any suggestions.
You have to let them handle your money for living expenses.
What specifically do you not like about community Medicaid?
Another option is for long term care Medicaid and for him to be placed in a long-term care facility. You would still be able to keep house, one car and a higher level or savings/assets as community spouse.
Others that have more ideas will give you ideas.
These are some ideas that I can offer you.
Is your husband a Veteran? If so the VA may provide some help. If he is a Veteran contact your local Veterans Assistance Commission they can help you find out if he qualifies for any benefits. It might be a little...it might be a LOT
Have you contacted your local Senior service Center or local Area Agency on Ageing. There may be programs that you might qualify for.
Getting a Hospice evaluation is a great idea.
Contact one or two in your area and ask for an evaluation. The doctor does not have to be the first one to refer you. They can contact the doctor and get the information they need.
With Hospice you will get some help with a Nurse that will come 1 time a week, more often if needed, and the nurse will also order all the medication and equipment that you need and it will be delivered to you.
You will have a CNA that will come at least 2 times a week to give him a bath or shower. The CNA will order all the personal supplies you need.
You can also request a Volunteer that can come and give you a break. Typically that would be 1 time a week for up to 3 or 4 hours. (they can do no "hands on care")
Hospice will also be able to place your husband in Respite Care so you can get a real break.
The Social Worker is also part of the Team and they might be able to help you navigate Medicaid waters or at least give you ideas for other options.
