My mother moved in with my wife and I a little over a year ago. She is independent for the most part but is legally blind and needs some assistance with things like mail, medication and meals. We are retired and would like a little freedom to travel but have no one to help with my mother. Are there services that can come in and check on her periodically or on call?

Find Care & Housing
You need to plan how you will cope if the “service that comes in and checks on her periodically” finds something badly wrong. Respite care is a safer bet, both for her and for your holiday.

Yes. An In-Home Care Provider agency will provide exactly that.

You may also be able to find an individual by posting your need on NextDoor in your community. NextDoor is like facebook for local neighborhoods. Be wary though of hiring anyone without proper vetting. Make sure you get a background check and references and know their experience and skill level. You might have to go through a few workers before finding a good fit.

Home health aides are generally 3-4 hour minimum and they prefer set schedules.

You could try placing a listing for help wanted on Care.com. Or Google Geriatric Care Manager and your zip code.

Or there is the assisted living respite idea as previously mentioned. If you can get that to work, it might be best.

Or if there is a nursing school near you, you may be able to find a person that way.

Lastly, try your local county on aging. They can tell you if there are volunteer groups who might be able to help though they usually have rules about what they can and cannot do.

You could move her into an assisted living facility for respite care. Then she moves back home with you after you return. Or maybe not…..

How about an assisted living facility for your mother where she'll receive the care she requires, and you and your wife can get your life back and travel if and when you want without having to worry about her? Plus you can get back to just being her loving son and not her burned out and stuck caregiver.
And another plus is that your mother will be around other folks her own age and get to be involved in as many activities as she wants.
It's a win win for all involved.
