Mom's deterioration has greatly accelerated. she's lost her executive function. aid caught her pouring nail polish into her water bottle, clogging up the toilet with an unknown object that we need to call the plumber on and we routinely have to intercept her before she attempts to go down the stairs.
What this all means is that the balance between freedom and enrichment and the need for safety have greatly changed. Anytime she can't be totally watched she must be put to bed. She can't be trusted as she'll do something and now know why

Find Care & Housing
Putting mom to bed every time she cannot be watched at home means she needs to go into Memory Care or Skilled Nursing care now where she won't have access to dangerous household products, stairs or other things that will cause trouble or compromise her safety.

My MIL was in a very nurturing and enriching multi-care facility for 7 years. She got way more there than if she had been in my house the whole time, and my life would have lost its freedom and enrichment in exchange.

Freedom and enrichment really are now being wasted on your Mom as the dementia won't allow for any of the mental, emotional and physical benefits of it. You are romanticizing and projecting your concept of her "aging in place". She will get far more socialization and exposure to activities in a good facility. She will have more eyes on her for safety. And your life won't be diminished because of hers. As a Mother, I'd never want any of my children to make that sacrifice for any reason -- I've lived a very good life and now want the same for them.

Sounds like it's time to have your mom placed in a care facility where she'll receive the 24/7 care she now requires, or hire 24/7 care at home for her.
In most cases however(unless it's unpaid family members), the cost of facility care is much less expensive.

You have reached the stage where supervising M will take over your life, because she has to be supervised every time she is not asleep in bed. This is the time that you need to check out the options, so that she can be safe and you can have at least some quality of life. With luck, the option you find can also have some 'quality time' for her, with new friends and experiences, as well as letting you feel that you have done the best for her.
